Without doubt, I know that girls lack confidence. So, how do we cultivate confidence and a positive self-efficacy -that “I can do it” attitude? The easy answer is competence. Confidence is the natural outcome of competence and skill development. The more girls put in the time and practice developing their skill set – whether it’s baking and cooking, ice skating and swimming, or computer coding and web design (or all of these skills), the more they experience that – with time and effort – they can get better at skills and they can do whatever they want. Competence yields confidence. Yet, even the decision to develop competence requires some preliminary confidence. After all, it’s pretty hard to try anything new if you don’t believe in yourself first!
